Liverpool have Jude Bellingham problem as firm Jordan Henderson warning issued | Football | Sport

Liverpool have been warned by former Premier League defender Stephen Kelly that although Jude Bellingham would undoubtedly be a terrific signing for them at the end of the season, he should not be viewed as a direct replacement for Jordan Henderson at Anfield. The Merseyside giants are believed to be desperate to sign Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund when the bidding opens in the summer, although they will not be the only club with a keen interest in securing his signature.

The likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City have also been credited with a desire to land Bellingham, who has emerged as one of Europe's best young midfielders during his time in the Bundesliga over the last few years. However, it seems as though Liverpool will be among the frontrunners to snap him up in the summer transfer window if the club's decision-makers play their cards right over the coming months.

Kelly, who played in the Premier League for five different clubs over the course of his professional career, believes that Bellingham would be a brilliant addition for Liverpool given their need for improvements in midfield but has warned the Reds that the 19-year-old will struggle to replicate the commanding presence of Henderson in the engine room if he joins the Anfield club later this year.

"When Henderson is fit, that’s great because you know he brings that energy but because he’s getting injured all the time, that shows he cannot do it on a regular basis, so you need to replace him," Kelly told the BBC football Daily Podcast.

"That has been coming for a while. The rest of the Players in there... Fabinho has not been the same. [Stefan] Bajcetic, excellent, but can you rely on an 18-year-old? Bellingham going there would be amazing for them but I don’t think you want him replacing Henderson because you don’t want him to do that job of covering the full-back.

"The middle of the park really sets out how Liverpool play with the full-backs getting high and [the midfielders] covering their positions. It’s so hard if you don’t have those Players available. It’s a very difficult decision for Liverpool to be in."

Liverpool's midfield woes this season have largely coincided with the respective declines of Henderson and Fabinho, with the duo having been hugely important in shaping the club's successes under Jurgen Klopp over the last few years. It remains to be seen whether the signing of Bellingham would help the Reds to improve things in the middle of the park next season, although he would certainly be a shrewd long-term investment based on his performances for Dortmund and England over the last few years.

A possible summer move for Fulham anchor Joao Palhinha has also been touted in recent weeks, with the Portuguese maestro having turned plenty of heads since joining the Cottagers from Sporting a little under a year ago. A holding partnership of Bellingham and Palhinha, with one sitting while the other drives forward, could potentially give Liverpool the foundations to build a new midfield dynasty to replace Henderson and Fabinho for several years to come.
