Richards chipped in and asked if Lineker was "nervous" about losing his role on MOTD. But Lineker took it well and admitted he has had a long run.

He replied: "Nervous? I'm ancient. My time is nearly up."

Lineker has hosted Match of the Day since 1999, taking over from legendary broadcaster Des Lynam. But it has now been over a month since viewers saw him front the highlights show.

Last Saturday, Lineker moved to stop any speculation by confirming his absence was planned and also confirmed he will be back on our screens this weekend. He wrote on Twitter: "Just so there’s no misunderstanding, I won’t be doing @BBCMOTD tonight. I’m not suspended, just on holiday. Back next week."
