Liverpool could be forced to rejig their summer transfer plans if Frank Lampard convinces Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher to remain at Chelsea. The pair are both admired at Anfield and were expected to be pushed out of the door prior to Graham Potter’s sacking.
Jurgen Klopp is hoping to shake up his midfield ranks significantly at the end of the season, with the German boss starved of star quality in that department recently. Liverpool have had several injury blows in that department throughout the campaign, with a lack of depth in the centre of the park becoming obvious.
The Reds were hopeful of securing a double deal to sign both Mount and Gallagher, according to reports. Though Chelsea legend Lampard, who has been made interim at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, could persuade both Players to remain at the club and follow in his footsteps given that the duo are both academy graduates.
Express Sport takes a look at four alternatives that Liverpool could push to sign instead of the Blues pair…
Wolves playmaker Matheus Nunes was linked with a move to Merseyside last summer, and he is still a target within the club. The Portuguese international has not been to the best effect at Wolves so far this season, though at 24, he still has the potential to flourish in the Premier League and his price tag could still be significant.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool have joined the race to sign Brighton star Moises Caicedo, who recently penned a new on the south coast. The Ecuador international was the subject of bids from Chelsea and Arsenal in the January transfer window but was unable to force a move, though he is still attracting plenty of interest.
Manchester United are also keen admirers of the 21-year-old, meaning that Liverpool acquiring his services would be a major sign of intent. Caicedo is expected to fetch an almighty transfer fee if he does leave the Seagulls given that a bid of £75million from Arsenal earlier this season was not even entertained.
If Mount and Gallagher are deemed unattainable, Liverpool could turn their attention to a different England international – James Maddison. The Leicester City midfielder is expected to be on the move this summer after rejecting several contract extension offers at the King Power Stadium, catching the eye of several top sides.
Newcastle are long-term admirers of the No 10, with 90min reporting that Liverpool and Tottenham have also both registered their interest in the midfielder. It is reported that the 26-year-old would set the Reds back £50m, though he would provide some much-needed creativity to the Liverpool midfielder.
Inter Milan will need to sell at least one key player to ease their financial woes, and it could finally present the chance for Klopp to bring Nicolo Barella to the Premier League. The Italian midfielder has been one of Europe’s most underrated stars since joining Inter, and it could be the time for the 26-year-old to leave his homeland. Liverpool have been heavily linked with Barella previously and it would be no surprise for that interest to be reignited this summer.
