Leicester City ends pursuit of Jesse Marsch

Jesse Marsch was reportedly close to returning to the English Premier League with Leicester City, but the club has already made its new decision for the remainder of the season.

Leicester City hired Dean Smith as its new manager on Monday just one day after the Foxes talks with Marsch broke down. Multiple outlets reported Friday of Leicester’s original talks with Marsch following Brendan Rodgers’ sacking last weekend.

Marsch, 49, was most recently in charge of Leeds United over the past year helping the Yorkshire club avoid relegation back to the EFL Championship. However, Leeds United only won 11 of Marsch’s 37 matches in charge, registering a -8 goal differential over that span before his firing in February.

Despite the arrival of fellow American Weston McKennie in January, Marsch was replaced by Javi Gracia. Marsch also helped bring USMNT midfielders Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson to Elland Road since last summer.

Marsch also held manager spells with Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig before his move to England last year as Marcelo Bielsa’s replacement.

Smith was last manager of Norwich City this EFL Championship season before being fired in December.

Leicester City is currently in the bottom three in the EPL standings, with only Southampton sitting lower than them in the 20-team table.
