Many had actually been expecting the club to challenge for trophies, particularly after bringing in the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But United were a shambles last season, finishing sixth in the Premier League table with no silverware to show for their efforts.

Ten Hag’s reign started poorly with successive defeats to Brighton and Brentford, losses that only increased the doom and gloom mood around the place.

Yet the Red Devils have been on an upwards trajectory ever since.

Yes, United are still a work in process. They’re not fully back yet, as recent results in the Premier League - victories over Everton and Brentford aside - have proven.

But they’re still a team that could finish the season with three trophies to their name.
