Twitter reacts to Europa League play-off draw

November 7, 2022

The Europa League play-off, which pits the group stage runners-up in the Europa League vs. the third place teams in the UEFA Champions League group stage, has been made and it’s thrown up an all-time great clash.

The first fixture drawn was, amazingly, Barcelona vs Manchester United – teams with eight European Cup crowns between them.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to it:

A game which looks fit for a UEFA Champions League final is going to be played in the Europa League play-off round this year.

Barca disastrously dropped out of the Champions League this season having spent roughly a trillion euros in the transfer market to win the whole tournament – signing the likes of Robert Lewandowski – while Man Utd made their way to the play-offs in much less embarassing fashion, having finished second in their Europa League group on goal difference.

Domestically Barca have looked much more competent so far this season, and Man Utd have shown signs of improvement under new manager Erik ten Hag.

This promises to be a classic.

The other European giant who fell into the Europa League from the UEFA Champions League was Juventus, who suffered some pretty damning defeats in Europe’s top competition this season – notably being thumped by Maccabi Haifa in Israel.

Things are starting to improve at Juve now with young players coming through like Nicolo Fagioli and Fabio Miretti, and injured stars like Federico Chiesa working their way back to full fitness.

Juve will face off against a Nantes team who sit way down in 16th in the Ligue 1 table having won just two league games this season.

It’s fair to say that Juve fans were happy with the draw.
